Early press reviews have said, “the group’s new album is nothing short of transcendent-a bold fusion of jazzy beats, electronica and Latin flavor that suggests a multi-phased trip to paradise,” according to Global Rhythm. While the NY Post recently featured the band and said, “the album they created is eclectic, a little bit chill-out and melancholic but also with several ass-shaking songs. Imagine the sounds you might hear while traveling through the worlds where their music finds inspiration - Latin America, Spain, North America and the UK and you'll get what they are aiming for.” The band was also recently interviewed by Latino USA, which gives deeper insight into the band’s music, background, and inspiration.

Listen to their interview on Latino USA click here

Pacifika is the multi-talented Silvana Kane, a Peruvian born singer, and accomplished actress with a love of flamenco, electronica, and textured percussion; Adam Popowitz a Canadian bred guitarist adept at new wave, classical, and pop, and a skilled producer responsible for a catalogue that includes indie rock and Armenian folk music; and Toby Peter, a dub wise bassist born in Canada and raised in Barbados, explorer of jazz, hip-hop, Latin, metal and Caribbean grooves. Together the Vancouver based trio is making a new kind of global pop, music that nods to its diverse international influences, while forging its own unique voice.

Their intimate video “Me Caí” was featured on YouTube’s music page on the release date, and the song was chosen as the “Song of the Day” on the highly influential KCRW radio station.

Asunción has also been selected in Apple iTunes “Next Big Thing” promotion and is quickly climbing their Latin Alternative charts.

Pacifika recently performed two highly impressive Canadian shows in Montreal and Toronto and will be celebrating their record release in their hometown of Vancouver on April 24 at the Biltmore Cabaret. Stott has been on the global music scene for over a decade, helping to found the bands Stellamara and Lumin and producing records by the Tunisian-born MC RAI and the Persian fusion group Somma, among others. He released last year's SoukSonik, an EP, on Six Degrees' digital-only Emerging Artists series, but with his convincing blend of Middle Eastern and North African instruments and rhythms with modern dance music, Stott "emerged" fairly quickly. The EP charted heavily on CMJ and Jazziz, and a busy live touring schedule in Japan, Canada, Los Angeles, and Miami helped set the stage, finally, for his solo debut.

Stott began as an experimental guitarist in Los Angeles, but his work with Stellamara, a group that blended Balkan and Middle Eastern music with Dead Can Dance-style rock, inspired him to take up a serious study of the Arab lute, or oud. Moving to San Francisco in the mid-90s, Stott sold his guitar and spent several years studying with internationally known masters like the late Hamza El Din, and the Turkish virtuoso Omar Faruk Tekbilek among others. "Eventually," he recalls, "the electronics started creeping back in, and I became a bit more of who I was before. But I was still listening to a lot of Arab and Middle Eastern music all the time." The result was Stott's now-signature mix of electronica and Middle Eastern music; he became a sought after producer and remixer, and eventually founded his own label, Embarka Records.

All of which had him more than ready to do something solo. "I'd been producing bands for over 10 years," Stott explains, "and I just really wanted to do something on my own. I'm really enjoying the freedom and the mobility of a solo project." Of course, "solo" doesn't mean "unaided" – one of the most striking features of Saracen is the appearance of some swirling vocals, in Arabic and Persian, by MC RAI, Reda Darwish, and Hooman Fazly. But Stott himself plays most of the instruments: the oud, of course, but also the Turkish lutes known as saz and cumbus, the Persian santur (a hammered dulcimer), the electric bass, and lots of hand percussion.

Stott's approach to world music actually comes from an academic background. Stott received a degree in Anthropology, and wrote ethnographies about the cultures of Turkey and Morocco. "It really affected the way I think about music," he says. "Not just the usual questions of the West 'borrowing' from the East, but influences going the other way too. I got to thinking about what a truly global music would sound like." That would explain the sound of the track "Sono," where Stott immediately announces his musical intentions: the funky groove is comprised of a whomping synth bass, near Eastern dumbek (a clay drum), and drum programming. But there are some telling moments of Latin timbale effects, and the melody spins out on both the oud and Turkish clarinet. Samples of the piercing, nasal reed instruments of North Africa and the Near East add a distinctive touch, both here and elsewhere on the record.

Four of the songs on Saracen originally appeared on Stott's Emerging Artist digital-only EP. But Jef re- recorded and reworked them, adding new performances and programming to each. On the title track, the Persian vocals and the ney flute soar over dubbed out electronic programming. The percussion programming is heavy on the dumbek at first, giving it a timeless quality despite the obvious Western production; then it becomes increasingly electronic until the oud enters, playing the melody, and once again throwing into question what tradition this music comes from.

Indian percussion, especially the hand drums known as tabla, has become a familiar sound in modern dance music; but Stott suggests that other parts of the world have as much to offer. "I definitely think Middle Eastern percussion is right up there with the Indian, West African and Brazilian traditions," he says. "It can be really virtuosic and fantastically musical." "Faqir," for example, is based on an ancient Egyptian rhythm called zaar, which is meant to ward off evil. "The zaar is there at the very end,"Stott reveals; "it's a trancy Sufi rhythm that's the basis of the whole song, but after I built the piece on top of it, I removed most of the original rhythm." and Toby Peter, a dub wise bassist born in Canada and raised in Barbados, explorer of jazz, hip-hop, Latin, metal and Caribbean grooves. Together the Vancouver based trio is making a new kind of global pop, music that nods to its diverse international influences, while forging its own unique voice. Latin tinged, marked by gently flowingmelodies, deep grooves, waves of cracking percussion and the occasional burst of exhilarating guitar noise, Pacifika's comfortable, complex sound defies categories, creating soothing soundscapes held together by Kane's smooth, intimate vocals.

Album available now in Canada. Audiences worldwide began to take notice of them after the release of their breakthrough sophomore album, Barí, and their subsequent 2004 tour. Their Grammy winning follow-up, Techarí, only increased their popularity among lovers of eclectic fusion. Incorporating genres of music such as bhangra, and featuring no less than 14 guests, their most exciting, sonically adventurous record to date is undeniably live album material. Recorded in their hometown on the last date of their 2006 tour, Techarí Live is an aural testament to Ojos’ passion and cohesive musicality.
Charismatic singer Marina Abad’s voice, which is as vibrant as her colorful, flowing clothing, takes center stage on the two Catalan rumbas, “Sultanas de Merkaíllo” and “Bailaores”. The songs’ vivid lyrics are bolstered by blistering solos by Cuban trumpet player Carlos Sarduy. Sarduy, who played on the original album, showcases his impressive chops much more on these extended versions of the songs, as does Cuban pianist Roberto Carcassés, who injects some salsa into the mix with his rousing piano montunos on “Bailaores”.

There is an unexpected moment on the record. In my opinion, no Bob Marley song needs to be redone by anyone. Ever. The results are usually bland. Nevertheless, Ojos de Brujo have taken one of his most enduring anthems, “Get Up, Stand Up”, and reworked it into a flamenco/reggae/salsa jam that is anything but with the help of Senegalese rapper Faada Freddy, who toasts dancehall style on the track. Marina sings the verses partly in English and Spanish, which may throw some listeners off, until the band chimes in with the chorus in English. That the band would feel an affinity for the song makes sense; Marley is an international symbol of freedom—a concept that is at the core of Ojos’ musical and business philosophy.

“Todo Tiende”, which was captivating on the original album, is even more stunning here. Preceded by an interlude of hypnotic strains of the tabla, Marina and special guest Martirio trade subdued vocals until the refrain kicks in. Martirio then punctuates the animated vocal interplay with dramatic flamenco wailing to the delight of the audience. The bhangra/hip-hop infusion comes to a head with Marina and percussionist/vocalist Max Wright’s lightning fast rapping.

Ojos de Brujo’s decision to mix flamenco with so many other seemingly incongruent elements undoubtedly invites the ire of flamenco purists. However, naysayers need only take a listen to “Tanguillos Marineros” to hear their underlying respect for traditional flamenco. Here Marina declares in Spanish: “There are big and little fish / The small ones take off and leave / The big ones eat the little ones… / The small one becomes great, turns into a shark / They join the revolt, Zapata lives, Revolution / They join the revolt, Bolivar lives!” Her populist lyrics are amplified by flamenco dancer Susi’s footwork and frenetic bursts of guitar by Paco Lomeña and Ramón Giménez, both of which garner appreciative cries from the crowd.

The album ends with a remix of “Nana” by Grecian group Palyrria. Although it’s not live, it builds upon the mysterious original track by adding overtones of classical Arab music. The only break in this spell-binding show is the superfluous inclusion of the studio version of their “Get Up, Stand Up” cover, which is already included on another Six Degrees compilation. Despite that, it’s easy to see how this Barcelona octet has gained a reputation for putting on an exuberant live show. This live album cements Ojos de Brujo’s reputation as one of the fieriest collectives that world music has to offer. The group’s commitment to sharing through art is evident not only in their multitude of collaborations, but also in the way they present their music. Unlike other groups that barely include lyrics with their liner notes, they usually like to include extensive artwork that visually represents their lyrics. This CD is accompanied by a DVD that contains a documentary, video diary, and music videos. One walks away with the feeling that Ojos de Brujo were not just satisfied with captivating and thrilling a hometown crowd; they wanted you to have the same visceral experience wherever you are.

-Popmatters

To read original article by Diane hightower of Popmatters, click here

To purchase Techari Live digital release, click here

For Ojos de Brujo FREE download of "silencio" click here

www.sixdegreesrecords.com

Chinese/ Indonesian/ flamenco Traveler

The new installment of Six Degrees' weekly internet radio broadcast is now up on i-Tunes' Radio Section (Under the Eclectic or Electronica headings) or at

http://www.live365.com/sixdegrees

On this week's edition of Six Degrees Traveler, our first set features hybrid music influenced by China and Indonesia, with a detour into Ethiopia. The X Factor is a television music talent show originating in the United Kingdom, where it was devised as a replacement for the massively successful Pop Idol, known in the US as American Idol. The competition is contested by aspiring pop singers drawn from public auditions. The "X Factor" of the title refers to the un-definable "something" that makes for star quality. Contestants compete for a recording contract as well as the massive amount of publicity the show generates. Gaudi’s selection as a judge proves his musical taste and knowledge is held in high reverence in the Italian music industry. The program will air from March 3rd until June 7th, broadcasted every night on RAI2 (Italian National Television).

Gaudi has been pursuing his own singular path since the early 80’s with his first major album release coming in 1990 with “Basta Poco” (Polygram). Since then he’s released 11 solo albums, 80 remixes (for artists including Bob Marley, Simple Minds and Ojos de Brujo) and been featured on over 100 compilations to date. His 2004 Interchill album Bass, Sweat & Tears, is still the label’s best selling release. He co-wrote and produced the album Re:sonate (FAX Records) with ambient-chill legend Pete Namlook and worked with reggae legends Horace Andy and Dennis Bovell. Dub Qawwali is Gaudi’s latest project featuring the legendary vocals of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Billboard has hailed Dub Qawwali as “a brilliantly realized concept and a stirring world music album.” Gaudi has recently followed up with the Dub Qawwali Remixes, featuring new takes of his critically acclaimed album from up and coming Dubstep innovator Pinch, label-mates Cheb i Sabbah and Bombay Dub Orchestra, UK's Pathaan, and himself.

Gaudi has also been nominated for “Best Music Artist in Club Global” for the BBC Radio 3 Awards in the World Music Category. The winning artists will be announced on April 17th at a winners ceremony in London to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 the following evening.

View Gaudi Official webpage here
For more o\info on Gaudi , click here
www.sixdegreesrecords.com

Electro-Dubby-Latin-Mash Traveler

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt;
